Next week we will have debate practice. You will take the podium, deliver an opening speech and then answer questions from Peter on your position paper.

You should prepare a 1 minute opening speech

You should prepare to answer questions on your issue and your proposed solutions.

You should also prepare to ask others questions

Position Paper Final Draft

Take the suggestions your partner gave you and rewrite your position paper.

Make sure you read your paper carefully and that you've covered all the main points.

Do not leave any big spelling or grammar errors in the paper.

Your final draft of the position paper is due next week. (5/26)

Position Paper

Begin researching for your position paper.
Find the following information about your issue:

Background

  1. What is the issue?
  2. Why is it a major problem?
  3. Where is it a problem? When did it start?
  4. Why hasn't it been solved yet?

Past and Continuing Action

  1. What has been done before?
  2. What is being done now?
  3. By whom (for both questions)?

Your Solutions

  1. 4-5 ways to improve the situation for the whole world
  2. Be as specific as possible
Your position paper should be one A4-sized sheet of paper with three paragraph. There should be one paragraph about each of the above key points.

The first draft of the position paper will be due after your midterm exams (5/19). You will have two class periods (5/5, 5/12) to work on your research and writing.
